Preparation for the installation:
If you are doing a clean install on a system that had window 98/98 SE installed
The first thing to do is to make sure you have your product key. This is usually on the Windows 98/98SE Manual that came with your copy of the retail version of Windows 98/98SE. If you cannot find this manual or you had Windows 98/98SE installed on a new computer you will need to find the product key. The best way to do this is with the Registry Editor.
To locate the product key in the registry boot your computer to Window 98/98 SE. Once the Windows has loaded click the mouse on the Start button and then select Run. When the Run Dialogue box opens type regedit in the Open: field and click the mouse on the OK button. This launches the Registry Editor. In the Registry editor click the mouse on the Edit button of the menu bar and then select Find from the drop-down menu. In the Find what: field type productkey and click the Find or Find Next button. This should locate the registry key with the productkey. Write down the ProductKey Data found on the right hand side of the registry editor. Make sure you have the ProductKey Data value and not the ProductID.
The key should be five groups of five alphanumeric values for example: abcd1-1234e-fghi5-6789j-klmn0 (note: this example is not a valid product key, do not use the example).
